With the <strong>ancillary provision<\/strong> &#8220;Gainful employment permitted&#8221;, you may carry out any employed or self-employed activity. If you are only &#8220;permitted to be employed&#8221;, you may take up any employment relationship, but you may not be self-employed.<\/p>\n<p>If your residence permit states &#8220;Employment only with the permission of the Aliens Department&#8221;, you must <b>apply to the Aliens Department for a work permit <\/b> before taking up employment.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, before a work permit is issued, the Federal Employment Agency must be involved, which may check whether local workers are available for the job and whether a salary appropriate to the position is paid. In these cases, the employment permit is initially limited to the activity applied for.<\/p>\n<p>For some residence permits, the law stipulates that gainful employment is permitted in principle or to a certain extent (e.g. for <a href=\"http:\/\/jurati.de\/migrationsrecht\/aufenthaltserlaubnis-zur-familienzusammenfuehrung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family reunification<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jurati.de\/migrationsrecht\/aufenthaltserlaubnis-fuer-studenten-und-absolventen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">students<\/a>, humanitarian residence permits or in the asylum procedure).<\/p>\n<p>If you have a residence permit for a specific job, you are generally only allowed to carry out this job initially, see here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Residence permit for <a href=\"http:\/\/jurati.de\/migrationsrecht\/aufenthaltserlaubnis-fuer-selbstaendige\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-employed persons, freelancers and artists<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Residence permit for <a href=\"http:\/\/jurati.de\/migrationsrecht\/aufenthaltserlaubnis-fuer-hochqualifizierte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">academics (EU Blue Card)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Residence permit for <a href=\"http:\/\/jurati.de\/migrationsrecht\/personen-mit-berufsausbildung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">persons with vocational training<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, you can have the employer commitment canceled if you<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have been in employment subject to social security contributions for two years <span style=\"text-align: right; font-size: 1rem;\">(\u00a7 9 Employment Ordinance) or<\/span><\/li>\n<li>have resided in Germany for at least three years with a residence permit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As an <b>EU citizen<\/b>, you do not need a work permit.
